Objective

  • Rummy is a ‘Draw and Discard type of game.
  • The main objective of the game is to dispose all the cards from your hand.

Players and cards

  • Number of players can range from two to six maximum.
  • 13 cards are dealt to each player.

Drawing

Each player has draws a card form either of the two piles: any card from the Stock pile or the top card from the Discard pile.

Disposing of cards

Disposing of the cards in hand is the main objective of Rummy. It is done in three ways:

  • Melding

Melding is optional. A player may place three or more cards in form sets or sequences. These cards have to be placed face up. The player can keep melds in his/her hand as tactic to gain more points.

Set: Laying down three or more cards of the same rank from different suits.

  • Laying off

Just like Melding, Laying off is also optional. The player adds cards to the already melded cards on the table – your meld or your opponent’s melds. There is no restriction to the number of cards to be added.

Laying Off Rummy

  • Discarding

Unlike Melding and Laying Off, Discarding is a compulsory option. The player finishes his/her turn by discarding a card from hand to the discard pile. Once a player discards a card then he cannot meld or lay off till his/her next turn.

One complete turn starts with drawing a card – from stock pile or discard pile, then the player may meld or lay off (optional) and completes his/her turn by discarding a card to the discard pile.

Stock Pile

Stock Pile is a pile of face-down cards from where the player can draw a card. As the pile starts depleting, the top card from the discard pile is laid aside and the remaining cards are shuffled. They are than used as Stock Pile.

Scoring/Points System

Ace & Face’s (Jack, King, and Queen) have 10 points each. The remaining cards carry points corresponding to the ‘Number’ displayed on the card i.e. Card with ‘4’ carries ‘4’ points and the same is applicable for other numbered cards.

Joker

One card from the rest of the deck is the Joker. It is a randomly selected. The card also called as ‘Paplu’ can be used in place of any other card. If used effectively, it is one of the most effective cards in the entire deck!!
